With the United States Government talking about all the tax breaks for small businesses these days. It makes me wonder... what is the requirement to be classified as a small business? What is the magic number to be classified by our Government? Is it 1, 25, 50, 100, 250, 500, or 1000? The United States Small Business Administration (SBA) defines a small business for each industry by the number of employees or average annual receipts. Were you expecting a flat across the board number? It is the United States Government... it will not be that easy. You will have to read through a 44 page document to determine if your business is eligible to be classified as a small business. However, by viewing the document, if your business on average generates less than $750,000 in receipts a year or has less than 50 employees. You are classified as a small business. The maximum number employees allowed to be declared a small business is 1,500. The maximum average annual receipts allowed is 175 million in assets for financial institutions. To determine if your business qualifies to be classified as a small business click on the the 'more info' link to view the SBA 'Table of Size Standard'.
